The Defence Correspondents’ Association of Nigeria, DECAN has called upon the Nigerian Military to honor media independence as enshrined in the nation’s constitution.
Emphasizing the importance of swift responses to journalists’ inquiries, the group aims to combat the dissemination of misinformation effectively.
During a one-day seminar focused on non-kinetic strategies in combating insurgency and terrorism, DECAN underscored the necessity of prompt and well-coordinated responses to counteract the influence of misinformation on public perception and overall security efforts.
DECAN highlighted the evolving nature of warfare, shifting away from traditional kinetic means, and emphasized the significance of embracing non-kinetic approaches to address security challenges effectively.
In a joint statement signed by DECAN’s President, Mr. Ismail Musa, and the Chairman of the Seminar Organizing Committee, Mr. Sifon Essien, the association stressed the importance of enhancing communication between the military and the media.
They advocated embedding journalists in operations without compromising military effectiveness, citing the potential for improved trust and mutual understanding through media involvement in planning and implementing operations.
Additionally, DECAN recommended heightened engagement between the military and community leaders to garner support and cooperation in addressing security threats.
In the era of widespread social media usage, the association urged collaboration between the military and traditional media to provide clarity and context amidst the proliferation of unverified information on digital platforms.
DECAN also urged the military to intensify operations to stay ahead of non-state actors and ensure the safety of citizens by eradicating unprovoked attacks, wanton killings, and property destruction.
