PSC Sets Up Foundation To Address Retirement Challenges

As part of measures to ensure a dignified retirement for police veterans, the Police Service Commission has set up a Foundation to help address some of the challenges affecting retirees.

The initiative, “Police Veterans Foundation” was inaugurated by President Bola Tinubu, represented by the Minister of State for Police Affairs, Hajia Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim.

Speaking at the inauguration, in Abuja, the Chairman of the Commission, Solomon Arase, explained that the Foundation aims to address the healthcare needs, provide insurance coverage, and support business plans of retired police officers.

Arase expressed concern over the challenges faced by retired police officers, which includes poor access to healthcare and post-service benefits.

He underscored the invaluable experience of police veterans in shaping government policies on national security, urging for their continued support.

Arase also emphasized the importance of selfless service among police officers, stressing the high expectations of Nigerians from them.

In a goodwill message, Retired Inspector-General of Police, Aliyu Attah, who described the initiative as apt, echoed Arase’s sentiments, emphasizing the sense of duty instilled in members of the force through years of service.

Speaking on behalf of the representatives of service chiefs, Rear Admiral AY Dahiru said the foundation will help improve the welfare of veterans as well as boost the morale of serving officers.

Representing the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, DIG Bala Ciroma reaffirmed the force’s commitment to the welfare of both serving and retired officers as a top priority of the present administration.

On her part, the Deputy Governor of Ebonyi State, Princess Patricia Obila, while urging State governments to prioritize the welfare of pensioners, stressed the need for the sustainability of the foundation.

The Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Umo Eno, while appreciating retired and serving police officers for their sacrifices, promised all the necessary support for the foundation to thrive for the betterment of the police force.

The event was attended by top government functionaries, traditional rulers, and retired police officers.
