NAFDAC: Global Fund Approves Additional $933 million To Strengthen Health Systems

The Global Fund has approved an additional $933 million resilience system strengthening for health HIV and AIDS tuberculosis, as well as malaria for the period of 3 years.

Mr Tajudeen noted that the additional fund was given to Nigeria because of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC)’s, successful utilisation of the previous grant cycle of 2021 to 2023.

”The resources in the form of grants of $933million which would be spent from January 2024 to December 2026, cut across HIV, tuberculosis, malaria and resilience system strengthening for health for the peak period of three years,” he said.

NAFDAC implemented a total budget of $2,305,695.03 for Global Fund’s grant cycle 6, to strengthen operations, and build capacity among others.

Addressing newsmen, the Director General, NAFDAC, Professor Mojisola Adeyeye said the first phase of the fund had supported the training of about 1,561 stakeholders across 36 states and the FCT comprising 832 in the Public Sector and 729 in the Private Sector.

“NAFDAC has successfully built the capacity of 76 staff members across 36+1 states on Pharmacovigilance of AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria (ATM) commodities,” she said.

The NAFDAC DG said the agency has been able to Strengthen market control of regulated products, medicines, and vaccines which had boosted supply chain visibility, and mitigation of substandard falsified medicines.

Prof. Adeyeye who said NAFDAC was mandated to safeguard public health by ensuring that food and drug products made available to the public are safe, effective, and of good quality,  announced the significant strides it has made in enhancing the safety and quality of pharmaceutical products in Nigeria.

”This has been through the implementation of pharmaceutical traceability, pharmacovigilance, post-marketing on the field checking for substandard falsified medicines, and other system-strengthening interventions.”

‘This endeavour has been made possible through vital support from the Global Fund’s Resilient and Sustainable Systems for Health (GF-RSSH) grant, with the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA) as the principal recipient.”

According to her, ”Under the GF-RSSH grant, several budget lines were implemented by NAFDAC during Grant Cycle 6, totaling $2,305,695.03, as outlined below.” READ ALSO: QNET To Empower Nigerian Youths, Underprivileged Communities

She added that the support from the Global Fund has had a profound impact on NAFDAC’s goals of ensuring the availability of safe and high-quality ATM health products to Nigerians.
