The Nigerian Institute of Town Planners has called on the National Assembly to amend the Urban and Regional Planning Act and other related laws to align with current realities.
The President of the Institute, Mr Nathaniel Atebije, made this plea in Abuja during a courtesy visit to the Chairman of the House Committee on Urban Development and Regional Planning, Mr. Awaji-inombek Abiante.
Mr. Atebije who also advocated inclusion of urban planning matters in the concurrent list, furthermore proposed the establishment of a National Urban and Regional Planning Commission to develop and implement national and regional development plans.
According to him, the move will harmonize and efficiently leverage the resources of each geopolitical zone within a national development framework.
He also recommended amending the law that established the Town Planners Registration Council of Nigeria to prevent the misuse of its provisions and ensure compliance with the intended purpose.
In addition to these suggestions, the President of the institute called for the update and formal adoption of the Nigerian Building Code to enhance its effective implementation.
Atebije further encouraged the committee to create an enabling environment for implementation of the Nigerian Urban and Regional Planning Law, which would provide guidance for physical development.
He recommended the establishment of relevant institutions at all levels of government and the recruitment of professional town planners to address the current deficit.
In response, Chairman House Committee on Urban and Regional Development, Mr Abiante expressed the committee’s willingness to collaborate with the institute to ensure effective urban development throughout the country.
Recognizing the crucial role of town planners in national security and emergency response, Abiante emphasized the committee’s commitment to amending existing laws and creating new ones to support efficient urban planning.
However, Abiante urged the institute to submit a comprehensive presentation to the committee and seek input from other stakeholders.
According to him, the collaborative approach will facilitate the smooth implementation of the amended laws once they are passed.
