Lawmaker Advocates Education, Hygiene Practices For Young Girls

Member Representing Abeokuta South Federal Constituency, Mr. Afolabi Afuape, has emphasized the importance of promoting good hygiene practices, improved access to quality education, and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) for the girl child.

Mr. Afuwape who stated this at a media conference in Abuja to commemorate the International Day for the Girl Child called for more discussions on the challenges faced by girls and the formulation of effective strategies to address them.

“The International Day of the Girl Child, observed annually on October 11th, was established by the United Nations (UN) to raise awareness about the challenges faced by girls worldwide and to promote their empowerment and human rights.

The day also aims to emphasize the significance of investing in girls’ education, health, and overall well-being, while also addressing forms of discrimination and violence that they often encounter, such as child marriage, gender-based violence, and limited access to education and healthcare”.

Regarding the importance of good hygiene practices, Mr. Afuape stressed that access to clean water, sanitation facilities, and adequate menstrual hygiene products are crucial for girls’ dignity and overall development.

He called for increased investment in infrastructure and educational programs that promotes hygiene awareness and practices in schools and communities.

While highlighting the crucial role of education for the girl child, the lawmaker emphasized that they deserve quality education that would equip them with the necessary skills and knowledge for personal growth and socio-economic empowerment.

He advocated for comprehensive educational policies and programs that would address gender disparities, improve access to education, and promote girls’ enrollment and retention in schools.

Additionally, Mr. Afuape highlighted the transformative potential of ICT in bridging the digital divide and empowering young girls.

The Lawmaker emphasized the need to provide girls with access to information and communication technologies, including computers, internet connectivity, and digital literacy training.

He called for relevant stakeholders to collaborate in creating opportunities for girls to develop ICT skills and leverage technology for their educational and personal advancement.
