Members of the House of Representatives have called for urgent restoration of electricity supply to affected communities in Ogun waterside Local Government area of Ogun State.

These communities including lbiade, Iwopin, Ayila, Abigi, Efire, llusin, Ayede, Olojumeta, Lomiro, Imakun Omi, Ode Omi, Oni, lukogbe, Igele, Irokun among other communities have been experiencing total blackout for the past two decades.

The resolution was passed following the adoption of a motion moved by member representating
Ijebu North/Ijebu East/Ogun Waterside Federal Constituency in Ogun state, Mr. Joseph Folorunsho Adegbesan.

Moving the motion, Mr. Adegbesan while highlighting the significance of electricity access drew the attention of the house to one of the major agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, which is to generate, transmit, and distribute sufficient, affordable electricity to the citizens.

He further stated that in a bid to fulfill his campaign promises, the President signed into Law, the Electricity Act to improve access to electricity especially at the rural, unserved underserved, per-urban and urban areas.

“The house is aware that electricity is one of the fundamental dividends of democracy and also in line with the sustainable development goals 7 which aims at providing universal access to affordable electricity by 2030.

The Lawmaker expressed concern that despite these goals and committement, the affected Communites have not received any intervention from the government, resulting in hardship for households and businesses.

In his ruling, the Deputy Speaker of the house, Mr Benjamin Kalu who presided over plenary directed the Committee on Power to investigate the matter and Report back to the house within 4weeks.

While calling on the National Rural Electrification Agency, NREA, to restore the communities to National grid, Mr. Kalu also mandated the Committee on power to ensure strict compliance.
