Nigeria Losses 2027 AFCON Hosting Rights

Nigeria’s joint bid with Benin Republic to has the 2027 African Cup of Nations, AFCON, in has been lost.

The 2027 AFCON will still be jointly hosted as Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania have been named as the countries to host the tournament.

This comes after the Minister of Sports Development Senator John Enoh arrived in Egypt on Tuesday with representatives of the Nigeria Football Federation,NFF, to bid to host AFCON in 2027.

However, the decision to award the right to the three countries as co-hosts was taken in Cairo, Egypt, on Wednesday by CAF’s Executive Council members.

Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania have ever hosted the Africa Cup of Nations before

Nigeria’s sole hosting of AFCON came in 1980.

Christian Chukwu that year led the team to a 3-0 victory over Algeria in front of the home fans.

The joint hosting with Ghana in 2000 ended in disappointment as Cameroon’s Indomitable Lions claimed the trophy at the National Stadium in Lagos.

Also on Wednesday, CAF Executive Council members awarded Morocco host of the 2025 AFCON.

This will be the second time Morocco would be named as host of the AFCON, after first doing so in 1988.

The upcoming 2023 AFCON will take place in Côte d’Ivoire in January 2024.
