As democracy remains a viable option for Nigeria’s development, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar promises to foster a robust democratic structure at the grassroots as part of efforts to restore people’s confidence in local council elections.
Tuggar disclosed this in a bilateral meeting at the high-level week of the 78th United Nations General Assembly where he received a delegation from the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance in New York.
The Minister pointed out that government must ensure transparency and accountability to Nigerians at the grassroots which will form part of President Tinubu’s foreign policy thrust.
He raised several issues such as the need to promote civic education and engagement at the local council level for Nigerians to become well-informed on their rights and respect the rule of law.
Led by Dr Kevin Casa-Zamora of the Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance, Yusuf Tuggar promises to work closely to support the 4D Diplomacy plan of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and restore their footprints in Nigeria.
The International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance is an inter-governmental organization that supports sustainable democracy worldwide and promotes political participation.
