HYPPADEC, Niger Government To Rehabilitate New Bussa Water Scheme

The Hydroelectric Power Producing Areas Development Commission, HYPPADEC and the Niger State government have embarked on rehabilitation of the New Bussa Water scheme that will benefit over sixteen thousand households in the area.

The water scheme which has been moribund for over twenty years is at sixty percent completion level and expected to supply five hundred thousand litres of water per hour.

During an inspection tour of the project at New Bussa,the Managing Director of Hydroelectric Power Producing Areas Development Commission HYPPADEC, Alhaji Abubakar Sadiq Yelwa said the rehabilitation will help reduce the sufferings of the people.

To address the perennial water scarcity in new Bussa,the Hydroelectric Power Producing Areas Development Commission with support from the Niger State government has embarked on rehabilitation work at the New Bussa Water scheme which was affected by the construction of the Kainji Dam.

The Managing Director Hydroelectric Power Producing Areas Development Commission, HYPPADEC, Alhaji Abubakar Sadiq Yelwa said the water rehabilitation scheme which kick started seven months ago with replacement of obsolete high and low lift pump as well as construction of a ten million litre reservoir to complement the already existing ten million litre reservoir, being executed at the cost of one point six billion Naira.

The Managing Director Hydroelectric Power Producing Area Development Commission, HYPPADEC Alhaji Abubakar Sadiq Yelwa also gave details of projects in other states under the commission.

The project which is expected to be inaugurated in November this year will add value to the water sector in the state as stated by the Acting Managing Director Niger State Water and Sewage Corporation, Mr Gimba Yisa and the Contractor, Mr Otare Kokobissi.

“The water rehabilitation scheme is already at sixty percent completion level
and when completed will benefit over sixteen thousand households in the area”.

Life has been difficult for residents of New Bussa community in Borgu Local Government area of Niger State, as water supply from the water scheme established about forty years ago broke down over twenty years ago.
