The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has strongly condemned the renewed violence that claimed several lives across Plateau, Kaduna, and Taraba States over the weekend.
This is contained in a statement signed by the NDC Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Abdulmumini Abdulsalam, in Abuja.
The statement expresses deep sorrow over the killings and extended condolences to the victims, their families, and the people of Plateau State.
It describes the tragedies as another clear indication of the Federal Government’s inability to address the nation’s worsening security crisis.
According to the statement, gunmen were reported to have invaded Gari Ya Waye community in the Angwan Rukuba district, near the University of Jos, opening fire on residents and leaving about 30 people dead and many others injured.
It states that the persistent attacks have triggered growing anger among youths in the area, with threats of reprisal if urgent action is not taken.
According to the statement 13 people were also killed during an attack at a wedding ceremony in Kahir, Kaduna State, while in Takum, Taraba State, a policeman, a fuel station attendant, and two internally displaced persons were shot dead while searching for food.
“We mourn with you, and we feel your pains. Your loss is our loss, and your grief is our grief,” Abdulsalam states.
The statement faults government for what he described as its recurring failure to protect citizens despite repeated promises to secure the country, noting that insecurity in the Middle Belt and other regions has worsened under its watch.
It also criticizes governors in the affected states, noting that even the initial efforts of Plateau State Governor, Caleb Muftwang, have “virtually petered out.”
The statement calls on the Federal Government to move beyond rhetorics and adopt concrete, sustained measures to end the killings, insisting that Nigerians deserve better protection from those elected to safeguard their lives.
