No Cultural Practice Should Infringe On Rights Of Citizens – PANDEF

todayMarch 23, 2026

Background

The Pan Niger Delta Forum, PANDEF, has called on the Nigeria Police Force to urgently investigate reports of alleged harassment and assault of women during the Ozoro Festival in Delta State.

This is contained in a statement signed by its National Spokesman, Chief Dr. Obiuwevbi Ominimini, in Abuja.

The statement stresses that no cultural or traditional practice should infringe on the constitutional rights and dignity of citizens.

It notes that all customs must align with the provisions of the Nigerian Constitution, which guarantees freedom, safety, and human rights for all.

According to the statement, PANDEF describes Ozoro as a peaceful and diverse community that accommodates many non-indigenes, including students of the Delta State University of Science and Technology.

It emphasizes that cultural events within such communities must be conducted with respect for all residents, regardless of background, religion, or gender.

The statement commends the prompt response of the traditional ruler and the President General of the kingdom for condemning the alleged incident.

it insists that those responsible must be identified and prosecuted in accordance with the law to serve as a deterrent.

PANDEF further urges community leaders to strengthen safeguards around cultural practices to prevent any recurrence, stressing that all traditions must operate within the framework of modern laws and human rights standards.
