Nigeria, Venezuela Mark 61 Years Of Diplomatic Relations

Background

Federal Government has commemorated the 61st anniversary of diplomatic relations between the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, describing the milestone as a testament to over six decades of friendship, cooperation, and shared aspirations.

A statement signed by Spokesperson, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, in Abuja, says that
diplomatic relations between the two countries were formally established on March 15, 1965, paving the way for sustained political dialogue, economic engagement, and cultural exchanges between Africa and Latin America.

The statement notes that over the years, Nigeria and Venezuela have maintained cordial ties rooted in shared historical experiences, including the pursuit of national sovereignty and a strong commitment to South–South cooperation and equitable global development.

According to the statement, both nations, which are major oil producers and members of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), have continued to collaborate on energy policy and global market stability, while exploring opportunities for cooperation in other sectors such as trade, aviation, education, and cultural diplomacy.

It also states that Nigeria expresses optimism that the partnership will continue to deepen in areas that promote sustainable development, energy transition, and global peace.

The statement further notes that the Federal Government also reaffirms its commitment to strengthening the longstanding bonds of friendship and cooperation between Nigeria and Venezuela for the mutual benefit of both nations.
