Nigeria Receives Long-Acting Injectable Lenacapavir for HIV Prevention

todayMarch 12, 2026

Background
NASCP,

Nigeria has received its first shipment of the long-acting injectable drug, Lenacapavir, for HIV prevention, marking a major milestone in the country’s efforts to curb new infections.

The National Coordinator, National AIDS, Viral Hepatitis and STIs Control Programme (NASCP) under the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, Dr Adebobola Bashorun who made this known in Abuja said that the drug arrived in the country on March 10, 2026, following approval by the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare. The procurement was supported by the Global Fund.

Dr Bashorun noted that the introduction of Lenacapavir for Pre‑Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) represents a significant advancement in Nigeria’s HIV prevention strategy, as it expands the range of options available to individuals at risk of contracting the virus.

Unlike daily oral PrEP medications, Lenacapavir is administered as a long-acting injectable, offering protection over an extended period. Experts say this approach could improve adherence among people who struggle to take daily preventive pills and help broaden access to effective HIV prevention services.

NASCP noted that the introduction of the drug reflects Nigeria’s commitment to adopting innovative and evidence-based interventions to accelerate progress toward controlling the HIV epidemic.

The programme said it will work closely with partners and stakeholders to ensure the safe introduction and strategic deployment of the injectable drug across the country. Plans are also underway to integrate Lenacapavir into Nigeria’s existing HIV prevention services.

According to NASCP, the rollout of the long-acting PrEP option is expected to strengthen the national HIV response by increasing access to prevention services, reducing new infections and improving health outcomes for communities.

Health authorities reaffirmed that Nigeria remains committed to expanding equitable access to HIV prevention, testing, treatment and care, noting that the arrival of Lenacapavir signals the country’s resolve to scale up innovative solutions in the fight against HIV.
