The FCT Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Dr Olusola Odumosu has described peace, tolerance and compassion, as a panacea for national cohesion and sustainable development.
Odumosu, stated this in his address at this year’s annual Islamic Lecture and distribution of palliatives to widows of fallen officers and the less privileged held at the FCT Command headquarters, Wuse Zone 5, Abuja.
He said that the event which is the practice of the Command during Ramadan was a reaffirmation of the Corps’ commitment to improving the welfare of his personnel especially during fasting as exemplified by the Almighty Allah.
Dr Odumosu confirmed that Ramadan is a time of preaching love and reaching out to the less privileged, consequently the FCT Command take advantage of the period to share foodstuffs and cash gifts to assist the widows of the fallen officers to break their fast as well as those in need.
The FCT NSCDC Boss maintained that, the FCT Command, recognises that the Corps’ duty extends beyond safeguarding lives and Critical Assets; it also includes caring for the welfare of officers, their families and the communities they serve.
He reiterated the need for peaceful co existence and harmonious leaving amongst all and sundry as a means to sustainable development.
The Commandant, noted that the widows of the gallant officers made great sacrifices alongside their spouses in their service to the nation adding that supporting them was not charity but moral obligation and a mark of institutional gratitude.
He used the opportunity to call on privileged FCT residents to make it a point of duty to reach out to those in need amongst them and not necessarily waiting for Ramadan, stating that there are always people with diverse needs in our midst.
Odumosu commended the Muslim Ummah, and the resource persons for reminding personnel of the need to show love and tolerance in their families because it is important to the success of the family.
“Your support towards the event reflects the spirit of unity and shared responsibility that our society urgently requires to forge ahead”.
The Commandant, urged the widows and other beneficiaries to see the gifts as token of love, remembrance and solidarity while acknowledging that material support alone could not address every challenge but hoped the gesture could give them some level of comfort and reassurance that they are not forgotten.
Highpoints of the event were lectures on “Legacy towards your heirs” by Shuaib Mustapha, SAN, and “What will you be remembered for?” by Fatima Oyarebu, as well as presentation of welfare materials and cash donations to the wives of the Command’s fallen heroes and the less privileged.
