AFN Golden League: Athletes Hit Personal Bests

Background

The AFN Golden League Series at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium started on Monday with many athletes achieving personal best in their various events.

In the men’s senior discus throw (2kg) final, Nyherhovwo Benaiah Ofuoku stamped his authority in the circle with a commanding throw of 45.95m to claim top spot.
The 19-year-old’s effort marked a new personal best, underlining his growing reputation as one of the country’s brightest prospects in the event.

Chineme Akachiukwu Nweke finished second with a solid 38.10m, also a personal best, while Emmanuel Shakamomodu Audu secured third place with 36.27m, a season’s best that capped an impressive outing for the Edo State Sports Commission athlete.
On the track, Chidera Ezeakor powered to victory in the men’s 100m, clocking 10.32 seconds with a legal wind reading of +0.4.
Tejiri Godwin finished strongly in second place in 10.37 seconds, a new personal best, while Gift Bright clocked 10.49 seconds to seal third—another personal best in a race that underlined the depth of sprinting talent on display.

In the women’s 100m final, Chinoso Courage Odika powered to victory in 11.69 seconds, edging out Mariam Jegede, who clocked 11.74 seconds for second place. Ejiro Peter completed the podium, finishing third in 11.76 seconds.
The Golden League Series is officially listed on the World Athletics calendar and signals a bold new direction for the Athletics Federation of Nigeria. While, Abuja To Host Three-Day IOC Governance Training For Women in Sports Administration
The Nigerian Olympic Committee has revealed that the Committee in collaboration with the International Olympic Committee will host an advanced gender-inclusive governance course in Abuja later this month.
The initiative is supported by Olympic Solidarity and forms part of broader efforts to strengthen governance and promote inclusive leadership within Nigeria’s sports administration.
The course is specifically tailored for former female athletes and women currently serving on the boards of National Sports Federations.
It reflects the NOC’s commitment to enhancing institutional effectiveness, encouraging boardroom diversity and aligning local governance standards with international best practices.
The Nigerian Olympic Committee President, Ahmed Gumel, noted that sustainable sports development depends on transparent, accountable and inclusive governance structures.
Gumel added that meaningful institutional reform requires capable and diverse leadership by strengthening the capacity of women in decision-making roles.
He added that NOC aims to improve compliance with global standards while reinforcing the foundations for long-term sports development in Nigeria.
Delivered under the IOC’s global educational framework, the curriculum is based on the IOC Sports Administration Course manual.
The training is scheduled for 23rd to 25th March 2026, at the Media Centre, Package B, Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja.
