You Are Accountable To God – First Lady Tells NASS Members

todayMarch 2, 2026

Background

First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has urged members of the National Assembly to recognise that they remain accountable to God for the laws they pass, as she commissioned a chapel within the parliament complex in Abuja.

“The chapel was built by the National Assembly Christian Legislators Fellowship and had been in the works for years.

“Its foundation was laid during the Eighth Assembly by former Speaker Yakubu Dogara, but the project was not completed until now.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mrs Tinubu, herself a former senator for 12 years, said the chapel symbolised moral responsibility in public office.

She recalled that Christian legislators previously gathered in committee rooms for fellowship because there was no dedicated place of worship within the complex.

“As you make laws for the people, remember you answer to God,” she said, adding that leadership requires humility and compassion.

In his remarks President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio described the building as a spiritual landmark within Nigeria’s democracy noting that governance must be guided by conscience and justice if it is to command respect.

Also, Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu said the chapel offers lawmakers a space for reflection during moments of intense political debate.

In their goodwill messages, Former military ruler Yakubu Gowon called on legislators to promote national unity, while Dogara said repentance and forgiveness were essential to national renewal.

The exhortation was delivered by the Catholic Bishop of Sokoto, Matthew Hassan Kukah, who prayed for Nigeria’s leaders and institutions.

The event attracted prominent political figures and Christian leaders, highlighting the close relationship between religion and public life in Nigeria, where faith often plays a visible role in governance.
