Member representing Nnewi North/Nnewi South/Ekwusigo Federal Constituency of Anambra State,
Peter Uzokwe has urged the Acting Inspector General of police, Tunji Disu to open an immediate investigation into an alleged assassination attempt on former presidential candidate Peter Obi in Benin City, Edo State.
Uzokwe made the call while addressing newsmen in Abuja, describing the reported incident as deeply disturbing and unacceptable in a democratic society.
Uzokwe said the Acting Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, must order a comprehensive probe and ensure that anyone found responsible is brought to justice.
“Democracy thrives on the healthy competition of ideas, not bullets, not intimidation, and certainly not assassination plots,” Uzokwe said.
“If political actors cannot freely engage with citizens without fear for their lives, then the foundation of our democracy is at risk.”
He said any attack on Peter Obi would amount to an assault on the country’s constitutional democracy, noting that political violence must not be tolerated.
The lawmaker also called on Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo to ensure the safety of political stakeholders in the state, urging authorities to act with urgency and professionalism.
Uzokwe appealed to political leaders across party lines to condemn the alleged attack and urged citizens to remain calm while security agencies investigate.
