Nigeria, Germany Reaffirm Strategic Partnership, Deepen Multilateral and Energy Cooperation

todayFebruary 25, 2026

Background

Nigeria and Germany have reaffirmed their strong bilateral relations following a high-level diplomatic meeting at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja.

A statement signed by the Ministry’s Spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, says the Permanent Secretary, Ambassador Dunoma Umar Ahmed, received the German Ambassador to Nigeria, Annett Günther, for discussions focused on multilateral cooperation, economic collaboration, cultural diplomacy, and infrastructure development.

During the engagement, Nigeria restated its commitment to sustained diplomatic dialogue, emphasizing openness to constructive exchanges on areas of mutual interest.

Germany, in turn, expressed appreciation for the enduring partnership between both countries, highlighting the successful convening of the Nigeria–Germany Bi-National Commission in November 2025 as a significant milestone in bilateral relations.

Multilateral cooperation featured prominently in the talks, particularly reciprocal support on candidacies to the United Nations Security Council.

The German envoy acknowledged Nigeria’s support for Germany’s candidature and reiterated Berlin’s advocacy for multilateralism, global peace, and reforms within the UN system, including expanded African representation.

Both sides also explored opportunities in energy and infrastructure.

Germany conveyed continued interest in supporting Nigeria’s modernization of its energy transmission and distribution systems, describing the sector as critical to Nigeria’s development agenda.

On security cooperation, Germany reaffirmed its readiness to deepen collaboration through capacity-building initiatives and other frameworks aimed at strengthening regional stability and addressing shared security challenges.

The meeting concluded with both countries underscoring their shared commitment to multilateralism, economic cooperation, cultural heritage preservation, and institutional coordination, reflecting what officials described as the growing maturity and strategic depth of Nigeria–Germany relations.
