The Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Command, Dr Olusola Odumosu has assured electorates in the FCT of adequate protection against harassment and intimidation by hoodlums or political tugs who may plan to disrupt the Area Council election in the FCT.
Odumosu, gave the assurance when he granted audience to a delegation from the National Peace Committee on a courtesy visit to his office in Abuja.
He intimated the National Peace Committee, that his personnel have been properly trained on election matters by INEC, adding that as security operatives, the paramount thing on their minds is achieving hitch free elections come February 21.
“As one of the major stakeholders in elections security in the country, our role will start before the election and we are not going to stand – down until after the election results have been announced without chaos or violence.
“We are trained to keep a close watch on the electioneering process, and the series of meetings I have held with my Divisional Officers was towards ensuring there is no compromise”, he said.
Commandant Odumosu, urged the electorates to have confidence in the Corps and other security agencies in the FCT by coming out en mass to cast their votes as they are fully ready to protect them, and guarantee an atmosphere of peace, and transparency.
The FCT NSCDC helmsman disclosed that he is deploying Four thousand personnel across the nooks and crannies of the Federal Capital and will be working in synergy with other security organizations to enhance security during and after the election.
He maintained that the Command’s covert officers have been deployed to crises prone polling centres to mount surveillance preparatory for the elections day to avoid surprises.
Dr Odumosu called on parents and guardians to warn their wards to abide by the rules guiding the conduct of elections and avoid being decieved by desperate politicians that wants to grab power at all cost with any form of financial inducement.
He commended the National
Peace committee for the visit which he described as timely, adding that their act of selflessness to ensure a peaceful, free and fair elections was commendable.
The Commandant further assured of continous cooperation with Civil Society organizations, associations and observer groups in order to achieve a common goal for the country.
In her remarks, the project manager of the National Peace Committee, who led the delegation, Asabe Ndahi, stated that the visit was to discuss the evolving election security landscape in the FCT as well as share preliminary observations and explore areas of collaboration ahead of the forth coming Area Council elections.
While commending the FCT Commandant for their preparedness towards the forthcoming Area Council Elections, she assured continous working relationship with the Corps as they rely on reports from the field to boost their research on election activities.
