INEC Announces Dates For 2027 General Election

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC has fixed February 20th 2027 for the Presidential and National Assembly elections while Governorship and State Houses of Assembly Elections will take place on the 6th of March.

INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan who stated this during a news conference in Abuja also presented the Timetable and Schedule of activities towards the successful preparation of the polls.

Professor Joash Amupitan said the release of the election dates and schedule of activities for the 2027 general election is in pursuant to section 28(1) of the Electoral Act 2022 which mandates INEC to publish the notice of election not later than 360 days before the date appointed to the election.

According to the INEC chairman, the detailed Time table and schedule of activities have been uploaded to the Commission’s official website and circulated to all registered political parties and relevant stakeholders.

He therefore directed all the thirty six Resident Electoral Commissioners
and that of the FCT to publish the notice in each constituency.

Professor Joash Amupitan however advised political parties to strongly adhere to the timelines as the commission will not hesitate to enforce compliance with the law.

He assured that the commission will continue to cleaning and updating the National Register of Voters, strengthening engagement with security agencies to guarantee peaceful election.

Professor Joash Amupitan stressed that the commission remains dedicated to engaging with stakeholders to foster a transparent dialogue regarding the proposed constitutional amendment.

” INEC is an independent body. We are guided solely by the constitution, the Electoral Act, Regulations and Guidelines. We shall continue to act impartially, transparently and professionally in the discharge of our duties.”

He called on political parties to conduct peaceful and credible primaries, shun violence and inflammatory statements as well as uphold internal democracy.

Professor Joash Amupitan reiterated the Commission’s determination to deliver elections that reflect the sovereign will of the people.
