Unclear Stance Of Senate On Electronic Transmission Of Election Results Undermines Democracy – NLC

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has expressed grave concern over the Senate’s unclear stance on the amendment to the 2022 Electoral Act, particularly with regards to electronic transmission of election results.

This is contained in a statement signed by the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Comrade Joe Ajaero in Abuja.

The statement asserts that the ambiguity surrounding the Senate’s recent actions is jeopardizing public trust in Nigeria’s electoral system and undermining democracy.

The statement says the Senate’s failure to explicitly adopt provisions mandating the real-time electronic transmission of results by INEC has left room for confusion, with the existing discretionary provision remaining.

“This lack of clarity, poses a significant risk to electoral integrity, echoing past issues that have led to national unrest” Ajaero states.

According to the statement, the NLC demands an immediate, unambiguous explanation from the Senate.

“The National Assembly must ensure that the amended Act mandates real-time electronic transmission and collation of results, providing the transparency necessary for a credible election process” the NLC President stresses.

The statement warns that failure to resolve these issues before the 2027 elections could result in mass action or a total boycott.

“Nigerians, including workers, are closely monitoring the situation, and the NLC is committed to pushing for a transparent and accountable electoral process. The time for clear, people-focused legislation is now” Comrade Ajaero emphasizes.
