The Chairman of the Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Mao Ohuabunwa, has urged party leaders to prioritize unity, legality, and institutional stability as the party intensifies efforts to resolve its internal challenges.
Speaking at the 85th Meeting of the PDP Board of Trustees in Abuja, Ohuabunwa described the BoT as the “custodians of the soul and values of the party,” stressing that the present phase in the life of the PDP requires wisdom, restraint, and respect for due process rather than emotion or haste.
He noted that the party had faced turbulence in recent months arising from internal disagreements, leadership disputes, and legal battles, but said the PDP had endured because of its institutions and adherence to constitutional order.
According to him, the delay in conducting party congresses was a deliberate and responsible decision aimed at respecting pending judicial processes and upholding the rule of law, rather than an abdication of responsibility.
Ohuabunwa also referenced recent judicial pronouncements, particularly the Federal High Court judgment in Ibadan, which affirmed the legitimacy of the Abdulrahman-led National Caretaker Committee, urging party members to respect the judiciary and comply with lawful decisions.
He called on members of the BoT to rise above factions and personal ambitions, emphasizing that unity is a strategic necessity for the survival and resurgence of the party.
He added that with legal uncertainties easing, attention should now focus on reconciliation, rebuilding trust, and preparing for orderly congresses and a credible national convention.
In his remarks, the National Chairman of the PDP Caretaker Committee, Hon. Abdulrahman Mohammed, thanked members of the BoT for their support and reaffirmed the committee’s commitment to repositioning the party.
Mohammed expressed appreciation to party leaders and stakeholders, including the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, for standing by the Caretaker Committee during what he described as defining times for the PDP.
He stated that following the end of the festive period, the Caretaker Committee was ready to fully concentrate on its mandate, adding that the declaratory judgment of the Ibadan High Court in favour of the committee had provided legal clarity.
According to him, the committee would soon release a timetable for outstanding congresses in some states, which would pave the way for a smooth and credible national convention.
Mohammed described the PDP as a party built on national structures, coherence, and legacy, stressing that it could not afford to lose focus at a critical time in Nigeria’s democratic journey.
The BoT meeting ended with calls for continued dialogue, respect for party institutions, and collective commitment to rebuilding trust and strengthening the PDP ahead of future political engagements.
