Nigeria senior men’s national team, the Super Eagles, began their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign on a winning note, edging Tanzania 2-1 in their opening Group C encounter on Tuesday.
The match, held at the Fez Stadium in Morocco, saw the Super Eagles dominate the first half. Their pressure paid off in the 36th minute when a cross from midfielder Alex Iwobi found defender Semi Ajayi, whose header broke the deadlock to end the half 1-0.
The second half began explosively. The three-time African champions thought they had doubled their advantage early on, but Victor Osimhen’s strike was ruled out for offside. Instead, it was Tanzania who struck next; in the 50th minute, a Novatus Miroshi cross unsettled the Nigerian defense and found Charles M’Mombwa, who turned it into the net to equalize.
The lead was short-lived; just two minutes later, Iwobi set up Ademola Lookman to fire Nigeria back in front.
As at filing this report the victory means Eric Chelle’s side move top of their AFCON group C with maximum points.
