Lawyer and human rights activist Deji Adeyanju has condemned reports alleging that the tax reform bill assented to by President Bola Tinubu is materially different from the version duly passed by the National Assembly.
The activist described the development as a “mockery of Nigeria’s democracy” if proven true in a statement issued on Thursday to newsmen in Abuja
According to the statement, any alteration of a bill after its passage by the legislature constitutes a serious breach of constitutional procedure and undermines the sovereignty of the Nigerian people.
“There are disturbing reports that the tax reform bill assented to by President Bola Tinubu is materially different from the version duly passed by the National Assembly.
“If this allegation is true, it represents the greatest mockery of Nigeria’s democracy since 1999,” he said.
Adeyanju stressed that under Nigeria’s constitutional framework, the president is only empowered to assent to the exact version of a bill transmitted by the legislature, warning that any deviation amounts to fraud.
“I hereby appeal to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to wade into the alleged allegation on the tax reform bill for transparency and accountability in the interest of all Nigerians.
