The House of Representatives has urged the federal government to step up diplomatic efforts to secure the safe return of former President Goodluck Jonathan, who is reportedly unable to leave Guinea-Bissau amid the country’s ongoing political crisis.
Raising the issue during plenary, House Leader, Prof Julius Ihonvbere, said Dr Jonathan had travelled to Guinea-Bissau as part of an international election observation mission but became stranded following the outbreak of a coup attempt.
He noted that Dr Jonathan, who has monitored elections across Africa and other regions on behalf of international organisations, was on official duty when the unrest began.
“The government is aware, and they are doing everything possible to get him back as quickly and safely as possible. Our goal is to urge the government not to relent in that effort and to use all diplomatic means at its means to get our former president, a true democrat, back to Nigeria immediately.” the House Leader stated.
The Minority Leader, Kingsley Chinda, supported the call, praising Jonathan’s democratic credentials and stressing that the safety of all Nigerians abroad should be treated with equal urgency
The House subsequently passed a resolution urging the government to intensify diplomatic engagements and ensure the former president’s speedy return.
