Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Dr. Nyesom Wike has inspected major ongoing road projects across Abuja, giving an indication that Abuja bus Terminals will soon commence operation.
Wike who stated this during the inspection expressed satisfaction with the pace and quality of work at N2 and N5, while reaffirming the administration’s commitment to timely project delivery.
On the newly commissioned bus terminals, Wike explained that the facilities were yet to become fully operational due to ongoing procurement procedures involving prospective operators.
“Those who applied to run the terminals are undergoing procurement. We also need to verify the number of fleets they have. By the grace of God, before the end of the year, that process will be concluded,” Wike assured.
The inspection began at the N2 road corridor linking the Central Area to Wuse, where he observed significant progress, particularly in earthworks.
“The contractor has assured us that, God willing, by the end of May next year, first week of June, they will complete that road, which is very key in connecting Central Area to Wuse,” Wike said.
Wike thereafter visited the N5 road project handled by Julius Berger Nigeria Plc and described the level of work on the bridge, now in its final stage, as impressive.
“For those familiar with this project, we have been here several times. Today, we are standing on top of the bridge. Julius Berger has assured us that by the end of January next year, they will deliver this project,” he said.
Responding to questions on budget implementation, the Minister explained that the projects currently under execution were being funded solely from the FCT’s 2025 budget.
“We have not received any funds from the national budget for this year. What we are using for now is the FCT 2025 budget, which makes adequate provision for the N5 project,” he stated.
He clarified that the N2 project is being carried out under emergency procurement, noting that there were no challenges affecting budget implementation.
The Minister also commented on notices regarding the enforcement of outstanding ground rent payments, warning that Wednesday this week, remains the final deadline for defaulters.
“Most Nigerians who complain do not want to abide by the rules. When we started enforcement, there was a presidential intervention giving two to three weeks more. It has now been over four months,” Wike noted.
He stressed that Abuja’s infrastructural growth depends on residents fulfilling their financial obligations.
“This is the last time. We are not going to extend any further,” he emphasized, noting that the consequences of non-compliance would follow.
“If you have not paid the necessary charges on your property, the property will become that of the FCT Administration.”.
