FCT NUJ Seeks Closer Collaboration With Police To Enhance Security

todayNovember 18, 2025

Background

The Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ FCT Council has called for closer collaboration with the police to enhance peace and security in Abuja.

NUJ FCT Chairman, Comrade Grace Ike, made the call this when the NUJ executive visited the FCT Commissioner of Police, CP Miller Dantawaye, NUJ FCT Chairman.

She emphasized the need for a safe working environment for journalists while promoting transparency and responsible reporting.

“We are here not only to welcome the Commissioner but to reaffirm our support for a working relationship that promotes transparency, responsible journalism, and security in the FCT.

“The NUJ recognises the critical role the Nigeria Police Force plays in maintaining peace, security, and the rule of law in the nation’s capital,” she said.

Comrade Ike emphasized the union’s commitment to creating a safe working environment for journalists, free from intimidation, harassment, or threats, whether online or offline.

‘We have zero tolerance for the intimidation or harassment of journalists. At the same time, we promote ethical and responsible journalism. Misinformation can be dangerous, and journalists must be accountable for what they report,” she added.

The Chairman expressed optimism that a stronger partnership between the police and media would boost public trust and safeguard democracy.

In his remarks, CP Dantawaye acknowledged the media’s vital role in shaping public perception and supporting security efforts.

“We need you more than you need us. Your reportage can project our successes or hold us accountable when we fail. That is why synergy is not optional—it is a necessity,” he said, urging journalists to help educate citizens on obeying the law, registering vehicles, and avoiding conflicts with security operatives.

The Commissioner also outlined new security measures, including a rapid response strategy targeting “one-chance” criminal syndicates.
“Our response time has improved significantly. We aim to respond to distress calls within five minutes whenever possible. We have dismantled four different one-chance syndicates already and will continue to tackle crime with the full weight of the law,” he said.

CP Dantawaye encouraged residents to provide intelligence to the police, stressing that security is a collective responsibility.
“We are not magicians. Everyone in Abuja must partner with the police by reporting suspicious activities. If you see something, say something,” he added.

The police chief further promised proactive engagement with the media during emergencies to prevent misinformation and ensure accurate reporting.

“We will maintain an open-door policy and foster seamless relationships with journalists. When you invite us, we will come. When we invite you, please join us. Security and journalists must work hand in hand,” he added.

He assured proactive engagement with the media to prevent misinformation.

Senior police officers present included Lawrence Iwodi, Zanna K. Maidugu, Lamudo Alkali, and Josephine Adeh.
