To ensure effective waste management in the FCT, the Abuja Environmental Protection Board, AEPB, has constructed sewage treatment infrastructure and other waste management facilities in some parts of the nation’s capital.
The Outgoing Director of AEPB, Engr Osilama Braimah made this known during a Pull Out Parade organized on his retirement by the Board’s Enforcement Squad in Abuja.
Engr. Braimah said a major sewage treatment plant and other facilities had also been put in place towards making Abuja a first-class city with proper and effective waste management systems.
“As young officers when we came into service 35 years ago, a lot of facilities we have today were not there. For instance, they did not have the major waste treatment plant that we have now and this was built during the time that I was in service here and we’re also able to build sewage treatment infrastructure in Katampe, Guzape, all during the period that I was here and that same period we moved our solid waste dump site from Mpape to the present dump site in Gosa. All these are aimed towards building a first class city with proper and effective waste management system “.
According to the outgoing Director of AEPB, the newly constructed road infrastructure by the FCT Administration has equally contributed effectively to the smooth operation of the Board’s activities.
“And now with the road infrastructure being put in place by the present Minister of FCT, Barrister Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, AEPB’s operation is being greatly enhanced regarding waste management because our conveyance trucks are able to move faster to areas that we’re already not able to do so before now and you’ll agree with me that Abuja is a city that is fast growing and can compete with any modern city of the world ” Mr Braimah stated.
He expressed the hope that the ongoing procurement contract would give a new lease of life to waste management in the Federal Capital Territory because some obsolete equipment would be replaced while new ones would be purchased to ensure a cleaner capital city worthy of emulation.
While commending the AEPB Enforcement Squad for the Pull Out Parade organized in his honour, Mr Braimah advised staff of the Board to give the incoming Director the same support and cooperation towards actualizing the mandate of AEPB.
“I want to appeal to the staff and management of AEPB to give my successor maximum support and cooperation because this work is enormous and cannot be done by one person alone without the contributions of everyone towards realizing the objectives of the Board” the Outgoing AEPB Director stressed.
Engr Braimah, who takes a bow after 35 years in service, was presented with a special plaque by the Management Staff of AEPB during the Pull Out Parade.
