The Minister of State for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Dr. Mariya Mahmoud, has called for stronger partnerships and collaborative efforts in tackling the growing burden of cancer in Nigeria.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the 2025 International Cancer Week, held at the Nigerian Army Conference Centre, Maitama, Abuja, Mahmoud described cancer as one of the nation’s most pressing public health challenges that demands urgent, coordinated action.
The Minister noted that the event’s theme ; “Redefining the Future of Cancer Prevention, Access, and Equity for All” highlights the need to ensure that every Nigerian, regardless of background or status, has timely and affordable access to cancer prevention and treatment services.
Mahmoud lamented that cancer remains a leading cause of illness and death globally, with Nigeria bearing a significant share of the impact.
She reaffirmed the FCT Administration’s commitment to combating the disease through sustained investments in public awareness, early detection programmes, and strategic public- private partnerships.
According to her, the administration is determined to strengthen the healthcare system by prioritizing disease prevention and ensuring accessible, quality care for all residents of the FCT.
“The fight against cancer goes beyond medical interventions,” she said. “It requires empathy, education, innovation, and increased investment in research to save lives and restore hope.”
Mahmoud commended the organizers of the International Cancer Week for providing a platform that fosters dialogue, promotes collaboration, and mobilizes collective action to change the narrative for families and communities affected by cancer.
She also applauded the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, the National Institute for Cancer Research and Treatment (NICRAT), the Nigeria Cancer Society, and other stakeholders for their unwavering dedication to cancer prevention and control efforts.
Reaffirming the FCTA’s continued support, Mahmoud pledged the administration’s readiness to work with partners to strengthen healthcare delivery, deepen collaboration, and build a healthier future free from cancer.
