The House of Representatives has demanded that Ibrahim Usman Auyo, who represents Hadejia, Auyo and Kafin Hausa constituency in Jigawa State, provide evidence for his claim that lawmakers collect money to sponsor bills, motions and petitions.
In a statement in Abuja, House spokesperson, Akin Rotimi says that the allegation, made in a viral video, was “unsubstantiated” and could erode public trust in parliament.
He explained that Auyo will be invited to clarify his remarks when the House reconvenes next month.þ
According to him, if he fails to substantiate the claim, the matter will be referred to the Committee on Ethics and Privileges.
“The suggestion that sponsoring legislation is a contract job involving bribes is inconsistent with parliamentary processes,” Rotimi said.
He adds that the House has introduced more than 2,200 bills and over 1,100 motions since 2023, stressing that its legislative agenda remains anchored on transparency and accountability.
