NAWOJ, Plan International Seal Pact To Champion Children’s Rights, Gender Equality

todayAugust 15, 2025

Background

In a bold step to amplify the voices of women, girls, and children across Nigeria, the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists NAWOJ, has signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Plan International to promote gender equality and protect children’s rights.

The strategic alliance, sealed in Abuja, will drive advocacy, strengthen grassroots women and youth-led organisations, and use the power of quality journalism to challenge entrenched barriers.

NAWOJ National President, Mrs Aisha Ibrahim, described the partnership as “a pivotal moment in our journey towards empowering women and children”, one that unites two powerful forces with a shared vision of justice, equality, and inclusion”.

“This is not just a formality,” she declared. “It is a declaration of our united resolve to create a world where children and girls can thrive, where their voices are heard, and their rights upheld.”

“Through the ASPIRE project, we will build the capacity of local women’s rights and youth organisations and use our media reach to ensure their stories are heard far and wide.”

Highlighting NAWOJ’s long-standing advocacy for orphans, vulnerable children, survivors of gender-based violence, and persons with disabilities, Mrs Ibrahim said the collaboration will dismantle systemic barriers that limit women and girls’ potential.

Representing the Country Director of Plan International, Charles Usie and the Director of Program Quality and Influencing, Helen Idiong, hailed the partnership describing it as a powerful tool for change.

“No one can tell a woman’s story better than women themselves,” she said, noting that the MoU would deepen media advocacy and strengthen the fight for equality for girls.

The signing ceremony was attended by NAWOJ national officers from Zone D and the FCT Executive members, signalling a united front for transformative change in the lives of Nigeria’s most vulnerable
