Anglican Communion Nigeria, Severes Affiliation With Church Of Wales

todayAugust 5, 2025

Background

The Church of Nigeria Anglican Communion has officially severed all affiliations with the Church of Wales due to the recent election of Bishop Cherry Vann, a gay clergy member, as the new Archbishop of Wales.

The Primate of the Church, the Most Reverend Henry Ndukuba, announced this during the opening of the Annual Conference of Chancellors, Registrars, and Legal Officers in Abuja

Most Reverend Henry Ndukuba condemned Vann’s election, labelling it an “abomination” and a direct violation of biblical teachings. ”

He expressed disappointment regarding Vann’s election, highlighting the Church of Nigeria’s concerns over her sexual orientation.

“We reject the election of the Right Reverend Cherry Vann as the Archbishop of Wales.”

Drawing parallels to the Church’s reaction to the consecration of Gene Robinson, the first openly gay bishop in the Episcopal Church in 2003, Most Reverend Ndukuba stated that as the Church of Nigeria took steps after the election of Gene Robinson, we are severing all ties and relationships with the Church of Wales.”

Despite this separation, the Anglican Primate conveyed solidarity with orthodox Anglicans in Wales, affirming the Church of Nigeria’s commitment to support them through the Global Anglican Future Conference GAFCON and other conservative factions.

The Primate also revealed plans to bolster the Church of Nigeria’s presence in Europe, citing ongoing registrations in countries such as Germany, the Netherlands, and Finland.

While speaking on the conference, he charged the legal officers, Registrars and Chancellors, to uphold justice and doctrinal purity, likening their responsibilities to that of biblical watchmen.

“You are to understand yourselves to be watchmen for the church. You defend the church against all forms of aggression,” .

Earlier, the Registrar Church of Nigeria Anglican Communion, Mrs Kehinde Ajoni, said the annual program provides an opportunity for the Church Legal officers to meet and guide the church appropriately

Mrs Kehinde Ajoni assured that the outcome of the conference would proffer solutions to some dioceses with legal issues.

All the Registrars, Chancellors Anglican Dioceses across the country are attending the four day annual conference with the Theme: CALLED AS A WATCHMAN.
