D’Tigress beat Senegal to Clinch Women’s Afrobasket Final slot

todayAugust 2, 2025

Background

Nigeria’s D’Tigress have booked their place in the final of the 2025 FIBA Women’s Afrobasket after a hard fought 75-68 victory over Senegal in a nail-biting semifinal on Saturday August, 3, 2025, at the electrified Palais des Sports de Treichville, Côte d’Ivoire.

The much-anticipated “final before the final” lived up to its billing from two of the continent’s basketball powerhouses and longtime rivals went head-to-head for a place in the Afrobasket final.

Senegal stunned D’Tigress with an 11-2 lead in the first three minutes of the opening quarter.

Coach Rena Wakama’s side finished the first quarter on top after responding with a commanding 13-0 run to take a 14-11 lead before closing out the quarter ahead, 22-17.

The second quarter also saw the physical battle as both teams traded blows, with neither side giving an inch. D’Tigress managed to edge the period 21-20, thanks to a buzzer-beating three-pointer from Victoria Thiaw, her first points of the contest.

This shot ensured D’Tigress held on to a slender halftime lead, setting the stage for a tense second half.

However, the third quarter saw Nigeria blown away by their Senegalese opponents, with Senegal getting back into the game and we’re outscored 21-9 finding themselves on the back foot.

D’Tigress mounted a fierce 23-10 run in the final quarter to clinch the win and advance to the final.

Coach Wakama’s ladies will face the winner of the other semifinal match between Mali and South Sudan in the final of the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket, scheduled on Sunday, August 3, 2025, in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.

The victory keeps alive Nigeria’s dream of becoming the first African team to win five consecutive Afrobasket titles.
