Am An Asset to Ensure Tinubu Wins Second Term – Wike

todayJune 2, 2025

Background

In an unapologetic tone, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Dr. Nyesom Wike, has reaffirmed his unwavering support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, declaring himself a key player in the president’s re-election bid come 2027.

Wike, who stated this during the June edition of the media parley in Abuja, also identified the crisis rocking the PDP and political tensions in Rivers State as leadership problems.

Wike , the former Rivers State Governor and a card-carrying member of the PDP, appointed as Minister under the Renewed Hope Administration, openly made his stance known.

Speaking passionately, Wike stated, “I am an asset to ensuring that Tinubu wins a second term. I will support Asiwaju. The way we won other elections, that’s the way we will win again. I am not a liability. I am an asset whether you agree or not. Whether you like me or not, your opinion cannot change who I am.”

Wike’s comments came amid growing internal tensions within the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), of which he remains a prominent member.

Addressing concerns over the party’s survival ahead of the 2027 general election, he firmly rejected calls for his exit.

“If I say something about the PDP and they tell me to leave, I say let them be the ones to leave. Some people want to kill the party, and we say it will not die. That’s why we resist them,” Wike said.

He did not mince words in calling out the party’s leadership, accusing them of negligence and poor strategic planning.

“It’s a leadership problem. You can’t tell me that they didn’t have intelligence that Delta or Akwa Ibom would go. Leadership should respond with action , send a team, intervene. But they are just playing to the gallery.”

Wike further likened the current internal crisis within the PDP to a funeral procession, saying, “What is happening in PDP today is the activity of undertakers.”

On the escalating political standoff in Rivers State, Wike stated that Governor Siminalayi Fubara had not shown any sign of remorse amid the rift.

“He has the knife and the yam. Will he make peace without his Assembly members? Mr. President wants peace, and I can’t do otherwise, but as I speak to you, I have not seen him,” Wike said.

He clarified that the declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State was not an attack on democracy but a necessary move to preserve peace and avert the governor’s impeachment.

Wike also used the medium to reiterate his commitment to political resilience, saying, “If you don’t want to be abused, don’t go into politics. I am not afraid of being insulted by stakeholders. The right things must be done”.
