Mahmoud Applauds Female Journalists’ Role in Tackling Insecurity

todayMay 22, 2025

Background

The Minister of State for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Dr. Mariya Mahmoud, has commended the contributions of female journalists in addressing Nigeria’s security challenges, describing them as vital partners in the nation’s fight against insecurity.

Speaking at the inaugural Zonal Conference of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Zone D (North Central), held in Abuja, Dr. Mahmoud emphasized that the role of female journalists goes far beyond conventional news reporting.

“This conference represents a significant milestone, not just for the advancement of female journalists, but for promoting inclusive, ethical, and impactful journalism in our country,” she stated.

Addressing the theme, “Curbing Insecurity: The Role of Female Journalists in National Security,” Mahmoud said the gathering was timely, considering Nigeria’s ongoing struggles with terrorism, banditry, cybercrime, and misinformation.

“As women, professionals, and storytellers, you occupy a unique position in shaping narratives, giving voice to the vulnerable, and promoting national unity. You are often the voice of the voiceless and a beacon of hope in violence stricken communities,” she said.

The minister also highlighted the challenges faced by female journalists, including safety risks, gender-based harassment, and underrepresentation in leadership roles. She called for concerted efforts through policy reforms, capacity-building, advocacy, and solidarity to tackle these issues.

On the FCT Administration’s security efforts, Mahmoud outlined ongoing initiatives under the leadership of Barrister Nyesom Wike. These include enhanced inter-agency cooperation, investment in surveillance technologies, improved intelligence sharing, and the formation of joint task forces for rapid response to threats.

She also mentioned infrastructural upgrades such as street lighting, road rehabilitation, and urban renewal projects aimed at deterring criminal activities and improving access for security patrols.

Earlier, the Vice President NAWOJ Zone D , Mrs. Chizoba Ogbeche, noted that the role of female journalists in national security is increasingly significant and evolving.

She pointed out that the North Central region comprising Kwara, Kogi, Nasarawa, Benue, Plateau, and the FCT faces critical security challenges, thus requiring a stronger media role.

Ogbeche acknowledged the contributions of female journalists in reporting insurgency, banditry, kidnappings, and human rights violations, noting that their perspectives ensure more balanced and inclusive security coverage.

She advocated for greater collaboration between female journalists, civil society organizations, and academic institutions to enhance the quality and accuracy of security reporting.

The conference brought together delegates from across the North Central zone, providing a platform to explore the nexus between media, gender, and national security.
