Safety: Gwagwalada, Bwari Residents To Get Bus Terminals – Wike

todayMay 17, 2025

Background

Minishe of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Dr. Nyesom Wike, has announced plans to establish modern bus terminals in Bwari and Gwagwalada as part of ongoing efforts to improve the transportation system for rural dwellers.

Wike stated this during an inspection tour of ongoing projects in Bwari and the International Conference Centre in Abuja.

The Minister emphasized that additional bus terminals in satellite towns would address cases of “one chance” and enhance the safety and security of commuters travelling from the suburbs to the city center.

Wike noted that the bus terminals, apart from enhancing public transport connectivity between the suburbs and the city, would also serve as a safe, organized, and reliable means of transportation to major parts of the city, including Mabushi, Kugbo, and the Central Business District.

“We have agreed that we are going to establish one in Gwagwalada and one in Bwari, so that you have people who will take you from Bwari down to the city.

“You can now go to any bus terminal, board a bus or a taxi, and go to where you are going without having this problem of ‘one chance’, except you decide on your own to go and wait on the road,” Wike noted.

According to Wike, the provision of critical infrastructure in the satellite towns is a strategic move to discourage rural-urban migration.

He said Mr. President is concerned about rural development, adding that if amenities are adequately provided in the outskirts, people will no longer be compelled to move into the city center.

“From Bwari to the city, it’s not up to 35 minutes, and that’s the essence of decongesting the city, making people stay within the satellite towns,” he said.

Highlighting the progress made under the Renewed Hope Agenda, Wike listed the 12-kilometer road linking the entire Ushafa area, the dualization of the Kuje–Gwagwalada and Kwali–Gwagwalada as examples of completed and ongoing projects.

“We made promises, and to the glory of God, those promises have been fulfilled. The government of Bola Ahmed Tinubu is particularly concerned about paying attention to the satellite towns,” he said.

Responding to a question about the timeline for commissioning completed projects, Wike revealed that the official commissioning would likely take place after the Sallah celebrations.

He added that while the President is expected to commission major infrastructure projects, other dignitaries will handle the commissioning of schools and smaller projects.

“I pleaded with Mr. President that he should be able to commission one or two of the roads in the satellite towns, so that the people will see him and appreciate him for the work he has done,” Wike stated.

The Minister also expressed satisfaction with the renovations at the International Conference Centre and noted that the administration is committed to delivering world-class facilities to Nigerians.
