Three senators representing Kebbi State on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), in a move seen as a significant political shift ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The senators, Adamu Aliero (Kebbi Central), Yahaya Abdullahi (Kebbi North), and Garba Maidoki (Kebbi South) — formally announced their defection through separate letters read on the floor of the Senate on Tuesday.
Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau, who presided over the plenary, read the letters to the chamber.
The defection drew the presence of the APC National Chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, members of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC), and Kebbi State Governor, Nasir Idris, who were at the Senate in a show of solidarity.
The switch by the three lawmakers is expected to strengthen the APC’s political base in Kebbi State and enhance its representation in the National Assembly, as political parties continue to reposition ahead of the next electoral cycle.
While the senators did not elaborate on their reasons for leaving the PDP in the letters, political analysts suggest internal party dynamics and strategic realignments at both state and national levels may have influenced their decisions.
The development is a major blow to the PDP’s presence in Kebbi, a state where the party had previously maintained significant political power.
