The House of Representatives has called on the Universal Basic Education Commission, UBEC to ensure every child has access to free and compulsory education, as the country grapples with a staggering 18.3 million out-of-school children.
The resolution followed the adoption of a motion sponsored by member
Representing, Ikwuano/Umuahia North/Umuahia South Federal Constituency of Abia State, Obi Aguocha.
In his lead debate,
Aguocha expressed concern over various challenges hindering access to education, including insufficient funding, poor teacher quality, and socio-cultural barriers such as child labor and early marriage.
The lawmaker also highlighted the impact of insurgency in the North East region, which has led to school closures and abductions.
In response, the House urged the Universal Basic Education Commission to ensure every Nigerian child has access to free and compulsory education, as guaranteed by the Child’s Rights Act and the Compulsory Free Universal Basic Education Act.
The House also mandated the Committee on Basic Education and Services to oversee the implementation of the scheme and ensure compliance.
