Abejide Boosts NUJ’s Working Conditions With Air Conditioners Donation

todayApril 16, 2025

Background

In a show of solidarity with the journalism community, Chairman of the House Committee on Customs and Excise, Leke Abejide, has donated five air conditioners to the Nigeria Union of Journalists, FCT Council.

The donation was made during the NUJ’s first-ever Easter Cantata concert, where Abejide was the guest speaker.

The Member representing Yagba East-Yagba West Mopamuro federal Constituency of Kogi State, expressed concern over the current NUJ secretariat’s inadequate facilities, noting that the union deserves better.

He emphasized the crucial role journalists play in reporting government and societal activities.

The media is very important to everything we do. Both those in government and the private sector should realize the importance of journalists. Whatever you are doing, if the media is not there to report it, nobody will know it and it will be like dancing alone in your room.”

The lawmaker urged journalists to promote national unity and cohesion, noting that the current government has shown capacity in leading the nation.

The Lawmaker assured journalists that the House of Representatives will support initiatives to improve their working conditions.

NUJ National President Alhassan Yahya appreciated the gesture and sought his support for a bill to enhance journalists’ working conditions.

According to him, the union is working with stakeholders to present the bill to the National Assembly, which aims to bring about a new phase in journalism development and practice in the country.

NUJ FCT Chairman Comrade Grace Ike welcomed the donation, citing the union’s need for assistance.

She highlighted the benefits of unity and social events, including boosting morale, strengthening team cohesion, facilitating networking, and encouraging innovation.
