todayApril 16, 2025

Background

The Nigeria Union of Journalists, FCT Council, held its 2025 Easter Cantata Concert, calling for unity, discipline and responsible journalism to advance President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

The event, themed “Renewal and Hope: Harnessing the Transformative Power of Unity and Progress” brought together journalists, security personnel, lawmakers and civil society leaders for a reflective celebration marked by music, messages of encouragement and nationalistic fervor.

In his remarks, Member representing Yagba Federal Constituency in Kogi State and chairman of the House Committee on Customs and Excise, Leke Abejide, emphasized the need for courageous leadership, particularly in navigating difficult reforms for economic recovery and national development.

A leader must be willing to step on toes and do things that may produce some bitter experience at the beginning but the eventual and ultimate result would be a glorious end and light at the end of the tunnel.”

Abejide praised the Tinubu administration for its bold decisions, including the fuel subsidy removal, and encouraged journalists to support the Renewed Hope Agenda.

He also urged Nigerians to adopt a mindset of accountability and action.

Also speaking the Commissioner of Police, Ajao Adewale, charged journalists to practice responsible and developmental journalism, noting the media’s immense power to build or divide a nation.

Information is power, it can be used positively or negatively. One sentence, just a phrase, can either create peace or ignite conflict.”

While acknowledging the importance of press freedom, he urged journalists to use it judiciously.

NUJ National President Alhaji AlHassan Abdullahi also called on journalists to prioritize national interest and security in their reportage, promoting national development and harmony.

Comrade Grace Ike, chairman of the NUJ FCT Council, reflected on the significance of Easter and the concert’s theme, calling for renewed commitment to nation-building.

She emphasized journalism’s role in shaping public discourse and promoting societal transformation.

The Easter concert featured musical performances, prayer sessions and reflections, reinforcing unity and hope as pillars of a thriving nation.
