Parents Of Victims Of Fatal Shooting By NDLEA Demand N25b Compensation

The parents of two young brothers, Ivan and Eromonsele, are demanding N2 billion in compensation from the Nigerian Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) after a fatal shooting incident in Delta State last year.

Ivan, 2, was tragically killed, and Eromonsele, then just 1, suffered a devastating eye injury. The family alleges abandonment by the agency and inadequate treatment for the surviving child.

At a House of Representatives Committee on Public Petitions hearing, the NDLEA lawyer, Muniat Adeleye, claimed a N25 million settlement was agreed upon, with N5 million already paid.

However, the family vehemently denied any agreement.

Fidelis, the father, recounted receiving N5 million from NDLEA Chairman Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa as a personal gesture, not as part of a settlement.

“I was shocked to hear about an agreement, Fidelis said.I’m not a party to any agreement.”

The Chairman of the Committee, Mike Etaba demanded Marwa to appear at the next hearing, citing the gravity of the situation and the need for accountability.

The family’s lawyer, Matthew Edaghese emphasized the need for adequate compensation, stating, “A life was lost, and another destiny is being damaged. We seek justice in line with international standard practice.”

The matter was adjourned until October 22, 2024.
