Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Dr Nyesom Wike, has inaugurated a new Board of Trustees for the IBB International Golf Club.
During the inauguration in Abuja, Dr. Wike pledged government’s continued support to restore the club’s reputation while emphasizing its ownership by the FCT Administration.
The Minister expressed gratitude to the newly constituted Board members for their intervention in the lingering leadership crisis that had stalled progress at the prestigious golf club.
“Even if we gave you C-of-O, you know, I don’t joke. I revoke it any day I want to revoke it. So it is not your property. It is the property of Abuja but to be managed by the Board of Trustees and the executive, that is the way it is. If you want government to support you, government is there to support you.”
“So, on that note, I hereby inaugurate the Board of Trustees, led by Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem, President of the Court of Appeal, to go and conduct the EXCO election, and then, amend the constitution and register it, but note that we must emphasize that this club is owned by the Federal Capital Territory.”
The Minister commended the outgoing Board, led by General IBM Haruna, for their efforts during a turbulent period and called for cooperation moving forward.
“The crisis in the IBB Golf Club, we cannot fold our hands and see things deteriorate.Leadership is not easy. We want to thank you for all your efforts and to let you know that the government will not allow your services to just go like that in vain.
“You have to act the role as a patron of the club so that you will be given the respect of a patron, each time you want to go to the club, they see you as their leader, they see you as their patron, so as to move the club forward” Wike noted.
Wike explained that previous attempts to conduct elections at the club were hampered by internal conflicts, necessitating the deployment of security to maintain peace.
He also urged the Board to show commitment before seeking government’s support.

“Start something. When we see your efforts, we will back you up,” Wike said.
Responding, the new Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem expressed appreciation for the Minister’s timely intervention and pledged to work collaboratively to restore peace and elevate the club’s status.
She called on all stakeholders, including past leaders and club members, to support the Board’s efforts and contribute toward a shared vision to return it to its international prominence and growth.
“We shall do our best. The importance attached to the club by the government is proper, and we shall not take for granted the confidence you repose in us.
We shall try our best and ensure that all nerves are calmed.”
“Golf is a game that should develop the economy of a nation. When we manage our golf club properly and have golf tournaments, which will attract investors and other interest groups .
“I appeal to my colleagues on the Board to cooperate so that we can work as a body to uphold the confidence that has been reposed in us.
“We will also try to manage our resources. Where we are unable to complete our projects, we shall come, and I am sure that His Excellency, the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, will assist us.”
