Chairman of the House Committee on Sports, Kabiru Amadu, has stressed the importance of sufficient funding for sports development in Nigeria.

Speaking at the committee’s inauguration in Abuja, Amadu highlighted sports as a powerful tool for reducing crime and unemployment, as well as generating foreign exchange for countries worldwide.

Amadu noted that despite having over 40 sports federations, only less than 20 are functional, and merely five receive funding.

He pledged to reposition the committee for optimal performance and sought cooperation from stakeholders to advance sports in Nigeria.

The chairman emphasized the need to address decaying sports infrastructure, particularly national stadiums, through adequate budgetary allocation.

He also stressed the importance of timely preparation for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics to avoid repeating the dismal performance at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Amadu who urged the Nigeria Football Federation to proactively address problems in football administration also encouraged the National Institute of Sports to provide the necessary manpower and training to enable Nigeria to excel in sports.
