The House of Representatives has passed six constitutional amendment bills
seeking to reform various aspects of Nigerian law through second reading,
The bills, sponsored by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu and other lawmakers, aim to review the framework for Local Government Administration, death penalty law, Citizenship by Investment, indigene status, Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation, and Tourism in Concurrent Legislative List.
“The Local Government Reform Bill seeks to establish a robust legal regime to strengthen administrative efficiency, promote transparency, accountability, and deepen democratic practices at the local government level.
“The Citizenship by Investment Bill aims to introduce a new class of citizenship known as Citizenship by Investment, granting Nigerian citizenship to individuals who invest in the Nigerian economy above a specified financial threshold.
“The Death Penalty Review Bill seeks to review penalties for certain capital offenses in alignment with international best practices, promoting a balanced approach to justice with alternative sentencing options.
“The Indigene Status Bill aims to guarantee indigene status to persons by reason of birth, continuous residence, or marriage.”
“The Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation Bill seeks to establish the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation and the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federal Government.”
“The Tourism Bill aims to include tourism and tourism-related matters on the Concurrent Legislative List.
The bills were presented for second reading by House leader Julius Ihonvbere and passed through a voice vote.
