A bill seeking to amend the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999, to allow public servants to engage in healthcare education, production, and services beyond the current exemption for farming has passed its second reading in the House of Representatives.
The proposed legislation, sponsored by member representing Wase Federal Constituency in Plateau State,
Ahmed Idris, aims to expand the scope of public servants’ participation in the healthcare sector by enabling them to contribute through education, research, and service delivery.
Speaking on the principles of the bill, the lawmaker explained that the legislation if enacted, would permit public servants to engage in healthcare-related activities, potentially addressing healthcare challenges and improving health outcomes in Nigeria.
According to him, the bill will help bridge the gap in healthcare services, particularly in rural areas where access to medical care is limited.
Idris added that by allowing public servants to participate in healthcare education, production, and services, the legislation could contribute to achieving the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals SDGs, particularly Goal 3, which focuses on ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being for all.
