Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, has called on Nigerian universities to prioritize practical applications of knowledge to address real-world challenges.
Speaking at the University of Calabar’s 50th anniversary and 37th convocation ceremony, Kalu emphasized the need for education to go beyond theoretical foundations and focus on solving societal problems.
He advocated collaborations between universities and the business community, highlighting the importance of internships, apprenticeships, and mentorship programs in preparing students for the workforce.
Kalu cited World Economic Forum projections that artificial intelligence will displace 85 million jobs by 2025 while creating 97 million new roles in emerging fields.
He challenged universities to integrate AI-driven solutions into their curricula and retrain lecturers to keep pace with technological advancements.

Speaking after receiving his award Senate President Godswill Akpabio expressed optimism about Nigeria’s future, emphasizing the importance of self-sufficiency and domestic production.
He acknowledged current challenges but assured that within the next one to two years, Nigerians would see significant progress.
Earlier in his remarks, the Chairman of the occasion, Prof Ekale Braide and Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Prof Florence Banku Obi emphasized the need for community engagement and practical applications of knowledge to drive sustainable development.
The event was attended by many senators and members of the House of Representatives as well as the Chancellor of the University, Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero.
