The Defence Headquarters, DHQ has strongly refuted allegations of impunity leveled against the Armed Forces of Nigeria AFN in a recent editorial by a national newspaper.
In a statement issued by Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, Director of Defence Information, the military expressed concerns over what it described as an unfair and unbalanced portrayal of its actions.
It stated that the editorial reportedly accused the military of endorsing acts of indiscipline and failing to hold erring personnel accountable, particularly in cases involving attacks on electricity distribution companies (DisCos).
It argued that the claims lacked factual accuracy and failed to acknowledge the military’s internal mechanisms for discipline and accountability.
According to the statement, the AFN has well-established Military Police and Intelligence Corps responsible for investigating and prosecuting personnel involved in misconduct.
It further explained that the military operates Court Martials across its formations to ensure that offenders face justice, reinforcing its commitment to upholding citizens’ fundamental human rights.
The statement criticized the newspaper for failing to adhere to journalistic ethics by not seeking clarification from military authorities before publishing its editorial.
It emphasized the need for responsible reporting, particularly on sensitive security matters, to avoid misinforming the public and undermining national security efforts.
Furthermore, it dismissed claims that acts of misconduct are widespread across Nigeria, clarifying that reported incidents have been isolated cases and not a reflection of the AFN’s overall conduct.
It reaffirmed that under the leadership of the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Gwabin Musa, the military remains committed to its constitutional responsibilities and will continue to operate within the framework of the law.
The statement assured that the AFN will maintain its professionalism and discipline while prioritizing national security and public trust.
