The House of Representatives has urged the Attorney General of the Federal and the Minister of Justice to review and expedite trials for those in prolonged pre-trial detention.

This was sequel to the adoption of a motion sponsored by member representing Bakura/Maradun Federal Constituency, Zamfara State, Ahmed Sani Muhammad, who cited constitutional and international human rights standards.

In his presentation, The lawmaker explained that the move aimed to address systemic injustice, ensure fair trials, and reduce prison congestion.

He expressed concerns over individuals detained beyond legal limits, contributing to overcrowding, rights violations, and eroded public trust.

Responding, the House encouraged the Judiciary to adopt innovative strategies and mandated the Committees on Judiciary, Human Rights, and Reformatory Service to investigate delays, propose reforms and report back to the house within 4 weeks for further action.
