Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Prof. Joseph Terlumun, has applauded Ado and Ohimini Local Government Areas in Benue State for achieving Open Defecation Free, ODF, status.

A statement signed by the Director Information and Public Relations, in the Ministry, Funmi Imuetinyan in Abuja, says this achievement marks a significant milestone for public health, dignity, and development in Benue State and Nigeria.

Represented by the Director of Water Quality Control and Sanitation in the Ministry, Mrs. Elizabeth Ugoh, the Minister explains that open defecation remains a significant challenge in many parts of the world, with far-reaching consequences noting that it compromises health and undermines education—particularly for young girls, among others.

The statement adds that eliminating open defecation is a crucial step toward better sanitation, resulting in fewer diseases, higher productivity, and greater dignity for our people.

It emphasizes that the importance of sanitation cannot be overstated, noting that access to clean and safe toilets, along with good hygiene practices, drastically reduces the risk of waterborne diseases such as cholera, diarrhea, and typhoid.

This improvement will significantly enhance the well-being of women and children, who are often the most vulnerable when sanitation access is limited”

The statement commends the collaborative efforts of the Benue State Government, UNICEF, various community organizations, traditional and community leaders for their contributions
in achieving this status.

According to the statement with this achievement, the total number of ODF LGAs in Nigeria has risen to 136, underscoring the nation’s progress toward improving sanitation and public health.
