Senior Executive Course 42 participants of the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) have called on the federal government to formulate a comprehensive policy to address the challenges faced by civil servants after retirement.

The Deputy Monitor General, Amina Yusuf, who made the call in Abuja during a reunion of the set after four years of graduation emphasized the need for a government-backed initiative, to address the financial, emotional, and social challenges that retirees encounter.

According to her, life after retirement is really a source of concern, stressing that many civil servants find it difficult to save for the future due to the current economic situation in the country.

She also explained that, “With the kind of economy we are in now, it is hard to survive on a salary, let alone save for retirement or start a business, hence Civil servants have little time to plan for life after their working years.”

Yusuf further expressed concern on the struggles retirees face, including depression, loneliness, and financial difficulties, which she described as “a serious problem” that needs urgent attention.

On his part, the General Monitor of NIPSS SEC 42, Air Commodore Caleb Olayera, highlighted the significance of the reunion in strengthening bonds among members, many of whom are approaching or have entered retirement.

“This reunion is a way to ensure that our members remain connected and well-prepared for retirement “

The reunion also featured an outreach program to support the less privileged giving a donation of five hundred thousand to support the Abuja children’s home and advocated for effective collaboration to ensure proper upbringing of the children to avoid them becoming nuisances in the society.

Olayera noted that SEC 42 members are committed to giving back to the society, emphasizing that the initiative is part of their effort to foster a better society under the Alumni Association of the National Institute.

Also, National Welfare Officer of the group, Mrs. Favour Ugwuanyi advised young civil servants to pursue their careers with diplomacy and caution.

According to Ugwuanyi, “Be wise and diplomatic in your actions. You might make enemies while in service, which could lead to regrets after retirement”.

While speaking on her own experience in service, she said, “When faced with pressure to act against others, be patient, humble, and strategic, so that when you retire, you can mix with people in your environment without shame.”

The theme of the program is “Reigniting the Bond and uplifting the Distinguished.”
